Improvisation

Orchestral Improvisation Course

PHILOSOPHY

The main philosophy behind Galay's educational approach to improvisation may be resumed in the following statement: Music is a built-in component of Mankind and Nature, and underlies Language, Thinking, Emotional processes and all aspects of Social and Cultural life.  The formation of professional musicians in the Western society relies primordially on texts and written musical notation, which, unfortunately, frequently neglects the fact that Music is a natural phenomenon, where creativity is a fundamental part. Freeing this hidden potential would, without doubt, enrich all forms of music education and musical life in general.

COURSE TOPICS

  • Ear-Training and Preparatory drills
  • Creating and developing an idea
  • Experiencing different styles
  • Playing with expression
  • Solos, dialogues and group improvisations

For Orchestra Directors:

GALAY METHOD FOR ORCHESTRAL IMPROVISATION

by Daniel Galay and Dr. Racheli Galay

The Galay Improvisation Method for Orchestra is designed to teach orchestra players to improvise and develop their own style. Through a sequence of 18 orchestral pieces, aural skills, creativity and communication among the group members are gradually build up. Furthermore, concepts in theory and composition become clear and concrete to every musician, while having fun making music. The method offers a new approach to improvisation engrained in the building blocks of music. It was performed by elementary, middle, high-school and college orchestras and was presented in conferences, universities, conservatories and music schools in the U.S., Israel and Europe.
